Biotechnology- the field which I chose when I was totally sane and am fighting for it now partially insane. Biotech especially in India has treated people very differently from a common man’s life. When I was in std 12, I was inspired to take medicine and was day dreaming on wearing a white coat and checking on patients. The dream of just wearing the coat alone fascinated me. I scored low still ended up in taking a field related to life science BIOTECHNOLGY. When I heard the name my dreams of becoming a doctor fell into the well . Just the name alone gave me a fascination. Not only me, anybody who hears the word BIOTECH raise their eyebrows and that’s only because this subject has come up recently in India say around 1980’s and right now the word NANOTECH raises a common mans eyebrows. People in 2005 said that biotech is a very good subject and has got a bright future and they keep on telling it till date. I just wonder how a common man comes to a conclusion about a subject without a deeper knowledge in it. Even the PhD docs tell most of foreign nations have a good scope rather in India.Later I came to know India too have developed a lot in sci&tech.
Let me keep it straight and simple, Biotechnology is a field of life science consisting of various interdisciplinary subjects such as (microbiology, genetics, biochemistry, etc.,) maneuvering various techniques in living things and thus improving the health scale of human beings and produce useful products. But you cant stop with a UG degree cos you are a jack at this stage not enough to handle a lab and hence it requires a Pg followed by a doctorate. Getting into a good university for a pg is definitely a tough task for undergraduates. Its not electronics or information technology which can place you with glamorous profession. Its BIOTECH man come on, the name itself fascinates so it's going to be a fantastic journey with a lot of ups and downs in right proportions to attain a position. Its definitely going to hit your nerves, make you think crazy,make you talk stupid , will give you a lot of heartbreaking failures and finally give you a title “SCIENTIST “ isn’t that thrilling??!!! Yes it is..
What does such a alluringly named Biotech deal with???
First of all, it gives you a feeling that you are out of the box, odd,strange, whatever…cos many don’t chose this field and many give up and end up to profession which make them quick money in quick time. Can’t you make money in biotech quickly? Take 'NO' for an answer cos it will definitely take ten years to establish yourself in this field..
Next, it mainly functions on industries based on pharmaceuticals,drugs, agriculture, medicine, forensic science and animal husbandry. This science plays around with DNA. Be in genetics, cell structure, functions, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates. The DNA takes all the blame if a man malfunctions and and it happens mainly due to mutations that are caused by environment that has been over-explored and encroached and it continues still. The more we exploit nature, more mutations arise, new disease causing pathogens spread,and get highly resistant to the current medicines thus setting a change in the entire locality and spreads worldwide too. I wanted to be among some scientist who can fight back against these upcoming dangerous invasions of pathogens and to find alternative methods to minimize exploitation of our mother Earth. But how?on what?when?where?,Well, its classified..So lemme just flow with the current, with endpoints unrevealed!!!
